The following is the tentative itinerary for the upcoming guided hikes and work party days. All participants must fill out the registration form below which includes a waiver, have the physical ability to complete the hike/do the work, wear appropriate footwear and clothing, and bring water, lunch, snacks, etc. Shuttle meeting location for hikes will be at the vacant lot east of Odena Foods in Kakabeka Falls unless otherwise noted. Departure and return times TBA. A small fee of $5 per person will be charged to offset transportation costs for guided hikes.
Trail conditions vary in configuration from semi-active logging roads, reclaimed overgrown logging roads, and new trails with varying elevation changes.

Cleanup/Greenup Guided Hike: Sunday April 27/25

Join us for a hike and trail clean up along NWORTA's newest section of the Trans Canada Trail - Kakabeka Falls Trail from King Road to Whitewater Drive Sunday April 27 to celebrate Earth Day. Meet at Neebing Arena on Broadway Avenue 12 noon. Parking available. We will then hike the entire trail (3.8 km one way), focusing on clean up and green up (litter and brush), then hike back to Neebing Arena. Parking available at Neebing Arena 1715 Bowlker Road (Broadway Avenue). Bring gloves, and appropriate clothing/footwear. Garbage bags and tools provided. Open to all.
Discover the Trail Guided Hike: Sunday December 22/24

We have completed the Trans Canada Trail Broadway trail extension along Broadway Avenue. In celebration of this, we will be hosting an "out and back" hike along the trail from Neebing Arena to 25th Side Road. This will be a just under 5km. return hike. All ages welcome. Meet at the Neebing Arena for a 1:00 hike start time. Bring appropriate outerwear, footwear (micro spikes recommended), hat, mitts/gloves, water. We are calling on volunteers to come out this coming Saturday to help with the completion of our newest trail along the north easement of Broadway Avenue from King Road to 25th Side Road. All tools will be provided. Please bring suitable footwear, outerwear, gloves, safety glasses, water, lunch/snacks. You may stay as long as you wish, but we typically quit for the day around 3:00 PM.

Difficulty rating: Level 2 out of 3 (moderate to difficult elevation changes)

Hike time: approx. 5 hours

Hike description: Meet at the vacant lot east of Odena Foods in Kakabeka Falls (4751 Hwy 11/17 Kakabeka Falls). It will be the on your left immediately as you arrive in Kakabeka Falls coming from Thunder Bay. This hike will be a point-to-point (one way) taking in some new sections of the Shabaqua Trail. We will be hiking some of the highest elevations on the entire trail (high point 580m/1,900 ft. - Mt. McKay is 480 m./1,575 ft). There is one short section with a steep downhill grade, otherwise much of the route will have more moderate inclines/declines. Participants must be able to physically complete the hike. All participants must register through our new online registration form (scroll down) and agree to the waiver conditions. Please make sure to have proper equipment: suitable hiking boots/shoes, blaze orange vest/shirt (hunting season - *REQUIRED*), plenty of water, snacks, lunch, rain gear (if rain forecast), bug spray, sunscreen, warm weather clothing. All participants must follow directions of the hike leader or designate. We will depart Kakabeka Falls at 9:30 AM SHARP (sooner if all registered attendees are present). There will be a short tailgate safety meeting prior to departure so try to be there earlier than 9:30 AM. It is recommended that you download the Shabaqua Trail GPS track to your favourite GPS device (Garmin or Google Earth) by going to our Trails:Shabaqua Trail webpage.

This will be an "out and back" hike

The event is part trails clean up and part public education about Thunder Bay's growing trail systems. There will be info about trails, raffle tickets, memberships, etc. from various trail groups including Northwestern Ontario Recreational Trails Association . Come join us in the fun! We will park at KM 16 Adrian Lake Road and trek approximately 0.75 km. to the job site. As usual, bring appropriate footwear and clothing, bug spray, sunscreen, gloves, hat/hard hat, snacks, water, lunch. Transportation to/from Kakabeka Falls will be provided. Hand tools will also be provided. Only those with certified training will be permitted to use chainsaws. We are hoping to have our brand new brush saw generously provided through funding from the Trans Canada Trail Trail Care grant by then. Waivers are required to be signed which are valid for 1 year.

SHABAQUA TRAIL REROUTE/EXTENSION OPEN HOUSE INFORMATION SESSION JUNE 18/24:
NorthWestern Ontario Recreational Trails Association (NWORTA) has applied to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry to grant a Trail Work Permit to reroute and extend the Shabaqua Hiking Trail in Conmee and O’Connor Townships west of Kakabeka Falls, and unorganized Laurie Township south of Shabaqua. The purpose of this application is to apprise interested parties of our intent to construct new trails to mitigate shared use of public roads (Sovereign, Fleming, Shabaqua Roads) and local NWOSTA snowmobile trails. It also includes extending the existing trail further east from Sovereign Road @ Highway 590 to Luckens Road (O’Connor Township).

Meet 9:00 AM Kakabeka Falls - Return: 4:00 PM
This will be our 2nd and last of planned guided hikes of 2023. Join us for a guided hike along a section of the newly established Shabaqua Trail. Estimated distance is 8 km./5 mi. Meeting location is the vacant lot next to Odena Foods in Kakabeka Falls 9:00 AM. Departure time for the trail 9:30 AM. Our hike start location will be KM 9 on the Adrian Lake Road and hike end will be Adrian Lake Road KM 13. Shuttles will be provided back to the vehicles. Estimated arrival back to Kakabeka 4:00 PM
Trail difficulty: Intermediate - Participants should be physically fit and able to hike 5 to 10 km distances for 2 to 5 hours, be comfortable with varied terrain, rough trails, and moderate climbs. It is important to be suitably prepared physically, wear appropriate clothing, sturdy footwear, have adequate food and drink supplies, and have sunscreen and insect repellent. A bug net is also a good item to bring along. As it is hunting season, blaze orange is recommended.
The hike is open to all. Participants must sign a waiver, which will be good for a year from date of signing. Hike leaders directions must be followed at all times. Hike leaders will have sole discretion as to a participant's suitable preparation and physical abilities. A donation of $5 per person to help cover fuel costs for the shuttle vehicles is greatly appreciated.

Join us for a fun trail work party day as we continue to construct new "connector" trails on the Shabaqua Trail at the the north end of Adrian Lake Road west of Kakabeka Falls. Location TBA.
Meeting location is the vacant lot next to Odena Foods in Kakabeka Falls @ 9:00 AM. Departure time for the trail 9:30 AM. Shuttles will be provided to and from Kakabeka. Estimated arrival back to Kakabeka 4:00 PM
Although we try to keep the workload light, participants should expect to perform some manual labour, be comfortable with varied terrain, rough trails, and moderate climbs. It is important to wear appropriate clothing, sturdy footwear, appropriate gloves, have adequate food and drink supplies, and have sunscreen and insect repellent. A bug net is also a good item to bring along. Rain or shine, so bring rain gear if the weather forecast is not great.
Participants must sign a waiver, which will be good for a year from date of signing. Work party leaders directions must be followed at all times. Work party leaders will have sole discretion as to a participant's suitable preparation and physical abilities.
These outings are great opportunities for secondary school students to get their volunteer hour credits.
