Are you an outdoor enthusiast? Do you enjoy spending time hiking local trails? Are you interested in helping maintain small sections of trail? Take part in our Trail Stewards Program and become a volunteer!
NWORTA takes care of 50 km. of trails within Thunder Bay as well as west of Kakabeka Falls. Our trail stewards will help to keep our trails safe and accessible, which improves visitor experience.
Duties:
Make a commitment of at least 1 trail section visit at lease once per year - typically 3-5 km
Prune back overhanging limbs, clear branches and debris from trails. (*specific guidance will be given when volunteers enroll in the program)
Post/replace signs and trail markers as needed
Remove litter
Immediately report inappropriate uses or other issues to NWORTA. Report any issues that should be addressed immediately. (i.e. safety concerns, downed trees, sign vandalism, etc.)
Skills and Abilities:
Ability to safely use hand tools such as trail shears and pruning saws
Must have own transportation
Must be in good physical shape to hike trails
Ability to read maps
Engage with public in a friendly manner and be enthusiastic and respectful toward nature and people
Requirements:
Volunteers must have their own work boots, work gloves, and eye safety wear. Volunteers must follow NWORTA health and safety guidelines outlined in the training session.

The Trail Coordinator will contact you to discuss duties and choose trails that need to be kept and monitored.
The Trail Coordinator will meet with you for an orientation and to give you NWORTA trail maps and other necessary items including outlines of duties, responsibilities, and health and safety guidelines that volunteers will need to follow.
