TRAIL MAINTENANCE/AUDIT INFO:
NWORTA is committed to providing the best trail experience possible. We are able to provide that through regular trail audits and maintenance outings by our dedicated volunteers. If you would like to help with this, or if you experience anything that requires our attention, please notify us via email: nworta@nworta.ca. Thank you!
NWORTA 5-PHASE TRAIL PLAN (PROPOSED)
Our 5-phase trail plan as projected on the map above will connect the existing Trans Canada Trail in the City of Thunder Bay west to Atikokan, east to Nipigon, and south to the Minnesota border. This will provide a trail system to mirror and augment the existing Trans Canada Trail water trail through the area.
When completed, total available trail distance will be in the 400 kilometre range. Trails will be primarily geared toward hiking, however there will be certain sections conducive to other users.
These trails are/will be part of Trans Canada Trail network, and we are super excited to have this affiliation. Their support has been greatly appreciated, and it has helped us immensely with costs associated with trail construction, signage, and maintenance. We simply could not do this without them.
We have established 45 kilometers of our Shabaqua Trail, intended to connect Kakabeka Falls to Shabaqua, and about 5 kilometers of our Kakabeka Falls Trail, intended to connect Thunder Bay to Kakabeka Falls. These trails are located at Highway 590 and Sovereign Road in O'Connor Township west of Kakabeka Falls (48.39828, -89.70086) and at King Road (Fort William Historical Park and Broadway Avenue 48.35730, -89.35546) respectively.

TRAIL BLAZING/WAYFINDING
NWORTA has adopted the trail blazing/wayfinding system as shown in the picture above. As trails are opened up, these blazes are added in the paint scheme identifying each trail. In the case of the Shabaqua Trail, light blue blazes are used.
