PHASE II - KAKABEKA FALLS TRAIL 28 KM (proposed)
Note: Much of this trail is a proposed route only. Work continues to establish necessary approvals. Updates will be provided as available.
The map below shows the current approved section of the Kakabeka Falls Trail, which is registered as part of the official Trans Canada Trail trail network. As an extension of the existing City of Thunder Bay Trans Canada Trail, it continues from Fort William Historical Park westward for nearly 4 km. along the north easement of Broadway Avenue to 25th Sideroad. From there follow 25th Side Road south for 200 m. to the Lakehead University Hogarth Plantation Trail. We continue to work on gaining approval for the remainder of the trail to the Shabaqua Trail and Kakabeka Falls.

Projected to connect to our Shabaqua Trail near Kakabeka Falls, this trail is proposed to extend the existing Trans Canada Trail at Fort William Historical Park on Broadway Avenue west to Kakabeka Falls via Broadway Ave., 25th Side Rd, Rosslyn Rd., Harstone Rd., and Luckens Rd.
Proposed to primarily follow existing City and Township roads, this approximately 30 kilometre route provides hikers and cyclists a safer option rather than the Trans Canada Highway while traversing through the Thunder Bay area.
Campsite locations are available at the gem of the North - Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park in Kakabeka Falls, and Fort William Historical Park in Thunder Bay.
The approval process has been in progress for some time now. Work continues to satisfy Oliver-Paipoonge Township requirements. The City of Thunder Bay has also expressed an interest in extending the existing Trans Canada Trail from Fort William Historical Park on Broadway Avenue to Rosslyn Road.
TRANS CANADA TRAIL BROADWAY AVENUE EXTENSION PROPOSAL
NWORTA has been working closely with the City of Thunder Bay toward plans to extend the existing Trans Canada Trail along Broadway Avenue west from King Road (Fort William Historical Park) to 25th Side Road. Construction of this new natural-base, non-motorized recreation trail will occur on the untraveled Broadway Avenue north easement for 2.8 km. Once completed, it will become part of a proposed Trans Canada Trail land-based recreation trail system in the Thunder Bay area, extending west to Atikokan, east to Nipigon/Red Rock, and south to the Minnesota border. Known as the Kakabeka Falls Trail, it is proposed to connect the City of Thunder Bay to Kakabeka Falls and our 45 km. Shabaqua Trail just west of Kakabeka.
The trail will be established along or just inside the right-of-way tree line, and will be 2 m. in width, with a 0.3 m. trail tread. It will be signed with Trans Canada Trail markers, directional arrows, and paint blazes to guide users. It will also be signed with “No Motorized Vehicles” in order to comply with City of Thunder Bay bylaws for recreation trails within the city.
In order to maintain user enjoyment and experience, great care will be taken to minimize damage/removal of mature trees. Anticipated start date will be October 30 at the latest, with completion by the end of November. This will result in various construction activities involving chainsaws, brush saws, wood chipping, and excavation work during normal daylight hours.
Once completed, the free-to-use trail will provide a more enjoyable and safer experience for local residents, as well as those trekking across our great country of Canada. Thank you for your support and understanding. We hope you will take advantage of this exciting project and enjoy the new trail.
